The Reflection Seismic Method is often used to define the contact between basement rock and the overlying formations. Features such as faulting or basement channels can often be identified.

This reflection seismic line is over 2 miles in length, and was completed as part of a large groundwater investigation. The regional dip of subsurface units to the west is apparent at this valley site near the Sierra Nevada foothills.
